A Perfect Payara Candidate

In reality, the perfect applicant doesn’t exist. Agree?

Let me explain.

Here at Payara we like to do things differently. That includes candidate selection.

Not because we want to be noticed and branded with glory and fame and have our name up in lights on a grand stage at a gala award ceremony being lavished with trophies and gifts from high-level celebrities – but because it is often the right thing to do.

Thank You Community Contributors

At Payara Services, we welcome Community contributions through our GitHub. We’re keen to celebrate hard working open source pioneers who are essential to the work we do.

Two of our values as a company are openness – being open to new ideas, and ready to share and collaborate with others – and community – building strong relationships both internally and externally. We hope to make our Community of contributors, who work with us to make our product better and drive innovation, feel included and supported.

The ways our contributors have developed the platform this year have been varied and wide-ranging, and encompass MicroProfile, security, and various bug fixes.

Instagram for B2B Marketeers

In September, Instagram celebrated its 10-year anniversary. This makes it the youngest of the big social media giants (Twitter is 14, YouTube 15, and LinkedIn 18), but it also stands out for other reasons.

Firstly, it focuses on images and visual content over and above the written word. Secondly, its user base is much younger, with 95% of users under 35 years old. Compare this to LinkedIn, where only 77% of the user base is under 35.

This inevitably has huge repercussions for how we use the platform as marketeers.

Degree Apprenticeships in the Workplace

HURRAH! Our 2 new Digital and Technology Solution (DTS) Degree Apprentices have finally joined the Payara Engineering team ….and it’s been such a wait!

Recruitment of UK (DTS) Degree Apprentices is an unusual challenge as the business must think and act like an academic institution. Instead of the usual short hiring cycle, hiring a Degree Apprentice often takes longer than  a full academic year as initial advertising has to take place at the start of the school year (September) to fall in line with Year 13 options around University education. Candidates apply for Degree Apprenticeships at the same time as University places, and interviews/offers need to be timed to coincide with University offers during the following Spring. Once the successful applicant has accepted the offer, there is a long wait until November of the following Academic year before they start with Payara… so there is a lot of work done to keep in touch during that time.

Payara & the Eclipse Foundation

The Eclipse Foundation provides an environment for Open Source collaboration and innovation. It is home to more than 375 projects – including runtimes, tools and frameworks. Oracle donated Java EE and related GlassFish technologies to the Eclipse Foundation in 2017. With Payara Platform based on the former Oracle GlassFish Server software, our Founder and Technical Director Steve Millidge knew it made sense to join the Foundation to advance Jakarta EE, the successor to Java EE.

This case study, created by the Eclipse Foundation with our input, provides more details on our membership and how it advances our work – largely in Steve’s own words.

What’s the Big Deal About Fonts?

Fonts have many functionalities in the marketing world – the two most important ones being legibility and brand awareness. Your font’s main job is to deliver your clever messaging across to your audience in the most efficient way possible. Although to most people choosing fonts is not a big deal, there are people who have dedicated their lives to learning about how characters make us perceive information in ways that elicits different emotions based on their shape.

Using the Flywheel Model

Funnel is so 2019!

If you’re familiar with the basics of marketing theory and marketing and sales terminology, you have surely heard of a ‘Funnel’ model – often referred to as a ‘Sales Funnel’. For many years, most businesses have built their strategies with a funnel model in mind. The good and bad news is – the funnel is no longer enough! It does not consider some crucial influencing powers that are gaining in strength – customer referrals and word of mouth. While a funnel model may have worked for us in the past, it does not include customers as a driving force for the business growth. That’s why the inbound marketing strategy brings in a new model called Flywheel.
