This Friday is Virtual Payara Day – a quarterly event that looks quite different from our first-ever Virtual Payara Day (VPD) in 2018, despite the consistent success of VPD since then. Once we kick off a recurring event like this that receives glowing results, isn’t it easy to publish our template and rest on our laurels? However, because the needs and culture of a business are always developing, no template should be rid of that “edit” button. At Payara, the evolution of VPD is a useful example of how an already successful event can be improved by remaining alive and responsive.
The unplanned worldwide disruption of this year has proven more than ever the importance of a strong workplace culture. Businesses that were forced to shift suddenly from office-based work to a diaspora of homeworkers have had to rethink fundamental behaviours like collaboration, performance management, and tasking to name a few. The suddenness of this change, which for some organisations has bordered on radical, meant that management could not afford to prepare staff or “test the waters”. When businesses can no longer rely on tried-and-true tools and methodologies, the pre-existing values, interactions, and relationships that make up workplace culture become the lifeblood of success. Although every Payaran is currently working from home in response to Coronavirus, the whole team is still buzzing from Payara Week, held on the stunning sub-tropical island of Madeira. While this is our fourth annual Payara Week, it’s our first time hosting the event outside England. Flying everyone out to Funchal, Madeira gave the whole Payara crew the opportunity for a warm, sunny break from late winter (though it felt more like home to our equatorial crewmember).
Walk into any of the silicon-valley behemoths or trendy start-ups and there’s a good chance you’ll see a colourful mural of inspiring words on the wall, an ever-present backdrop for the team as they work on objectives from the most minute to the highest level. Core values — along with mission and vision statements — have become essential for any business, especially now that the active construction of company culture has become standard.
