What is Payara Cloud?

Payara Cloud (see interactive demo) is our fully managed Payara as a Service Jakarta EE deployment platform. Designed for effortless deployment, it provides a flexible and powerful solution for launching your Jakarta EE apps into the cloud. Forget about the hassle of infrastructure provisioning—just upload your application and deploy it within seconds.

Who Can Enter?

Everyone’s invited to join the competition—from students just starting out, to seasoned Java veterans, developers seeking innovative solutions for their organizations, newcomers, and devoted fans of Payara and Jakarta EE alike.


  • You must be 18 years old or over
  • See the Hackathon Rules for a full list of eligibility criteria
  • If you are familiar with enterprise Java coding, this is a great time to explore the power of Payara Cloud and Jakarta EE.

Mike is a Java Champion, he founded the Garden State Java User Group (formerly the ACGNJ Java Users Group) in 2001 which remains in continuous operation. Since 2016, Mike has served as a Java community news editor for InfoQ where his contributions include monthly news items, technical writing and technical reviews.

Ivar Grimstad

Ivar Grimstad is the Jakarta EE Developer Advocate at Eclipse Foundation. He is a Java Champion and JUG Leader based in Sweden. Besides advocating the Jakarta EE technologies, Ivar is contributing to the Jakarta EE specifications as well as being the PMC Lead for Eclipse Enterprise for Java (EE4J).

Patrik Duditš is a Jakarta EE expert who spent most of his programming career writing enterprise distributed systems in Java and is now working on making Jakarta EE, Micro Profile and Payara Platform a good target for these kinds of applications.

Task Requirements

We’re looking for applications (new and existing) that tackle environmental, social, and economic sustainability challenges.

We’re looking for applications (new and existing) that tackle environmental, social, and economic sustainability challenges

  • Core Technology: Utilize Jakarta EE, specifically the Jakarta EE Web Profile, as the backbone of your application.
  • Minimal Third-Party Dependencies: While the use of libraries and frameworks is allowed, solutions should strive to utilize Jakarta EE capabilities to their fullest, minimizing reliance on external dependencies.
  • Deployment: Ensure your application shines on Payara Cloud, leveraging its features for improved performance and scalability.
  • Innovative Solutions: We’re looking for open-ended ideas. Whether it’s a web app, a backend service, or an API, if it’s geared towards sustainability, it’s in.

  • 19 February: Payara Hackathon open for sign-ups (see the form below).
  • 8 March: “All you need to know about Payara Cloud Hackathon” Webinar – register here!
  • 11 March: Cloud Trial Access Begins for 21 days – if you signed up, watch out for email with access link.
  • 31 March: Apps Submission Deadline by midnight GMT
  • 1 April: Judging Starts
  • By end of April: Winners Announcement

  • Technical Mastery: Your prowess in harnessing Jakarta EE features, code quality, and architectural savvy.
  • User Experience: The intuitiveness, design, and overall appeal of your application.
  • Smart Use of Payara Cloud: How well you utilize Payara Cloud to boost your application’s prowess.

How to Enter

  1. Fill in the signup form on this page (sign ups now closed). Make sure you enter all the data!
  2. You may want to watch our informative webinar on the 8th of March -now available on-demand.
  3. Make sure you familiarise yourself with Payara Cloud and Jakarta EE using some useful resources linked on this page.
  4. Create your free Payara Cloud account (see how) – you will receive an email with the access link on Day 1 of the Hackathon or when you first sign up if you’re joining while the Hackathon is running, so look out for it after you sign up on this page!
  5. You have up to 31 March midnight GMT to deploy your app to Payara Cloud and submit your entry details on the Hackathon Final Task Submission page (closed)
  6. Winners will be notified via email and publically announced by the end of April 2024.

Payara Cloud Access

While you are preparing for the Hackathon, we advise you not to sign up for the current Payara Cloud Trial to work on your Hackathon app as it won’t be included in the Hackathon. The official Hackathon Payara Cloud access will only open on the 11th of March and once you register on this page, you will receive a separate email with information on how to access the Payara Cloud environment once the Hackathon begins on the 11th of March 2024.
