Meet Simon, new Senior Test Engineer (& Jessica & Casey The Cats!)
Simon joins us as we grow our global, remote-first team! He is a Senior Test Engineer and is part of the team from his home in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Here, we get to know him bettter:
❓What are some of your favourite hobbies to do outside of work? Why do you enjoy them?
My main hobby these days is painting small miniatures in plastic or resin, for tabletop games. I am not a great painter, but the process is very relaxing to me. And there is quite a satisfaction to bring painted miniatures to play the related game with friends.
I also love exploring the Scottish countryside, but that depends much more on the capricious weather!
❓Have you worked remotely before? How did you find it?
The pandemic in 2020 forced everyone in my previous company to work remotely. I was afraid of feeling isolated and lonely, but I found that working in my own room, without loud colleagues around or frequent distractions, was quite nice.
❓What attracted you to testing as a career?
Testing makes me consider many points of view, many scenarios. I need to think of who will use the product, how and why, and what could be a problem to them. It’s a very empathetic role, and that is the main reason why I love it.
❓What energises you at work?
Discovering and understanding new things.
❓How do you prefer to start your day?
A cup of green tea while checking my emails.
❓What’s your go-to productivity trick?
Go out for some fresh air, only for 5 minutes, when my mind is stuck on something.
❓Are you an early bird or night owl?
Early bird for sure!
❓What are you looking forward to about working at Payara?
Meeting interesting people, discovering and tackling technical challenges.
❓What’s your preferred communication style: email, f2f or rapid text chat?
Text chat is generally my favourite way to communicate. It’s less intrusive (and disruptive) than a video call but requires less care than a well written email.
❓What’s the biggest misconception people have about your role?
Testers don’t create bugs, we only find issues already existing.
❓What’s the top destiation that you’ve visited OR that you plan to visit?
I loved visiting Malta. Alternatively, I would love to do a road trip along the Adriatic Sea, from Venice to Split.
